Breaking Barriers Through Courage, Operational Excellence, and Uncompromising Leadership
True leadership is measured not by the barriers you face, but by the standards you establish for everyone who follows.
Few leaders have broken as many barriers in corporate America while remaining steadfast in their commitment to principled leadership as Rosalind “Roz” Brewer. Throughout a distinguished career spanning manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and consumer services, Brewer has earned widespread respect for her strategic vision, operational excellence, and unwavering belief that high performance and inclusive leadership are inseparable. Her journey stands as a powerful example of what is possible when competence, character, and courage lead the way.
A graduate of Spelman College with a degree in chemistry, Brewer began her career at Kimberly-Clark, where she spent more than two decades steadily rising through the organization. Her ability to solve complex problems, build high-performing teams, and lead large-scale operations established the foundation for a career defined by continuous growth and increasing responsibility.
Brewer’s influence expanded significantly when she joined Walmart, ultimately becoming President and Chief Executive Officer of Sam’s Club. In doing so, she became the first Black executive to lead a Walmart business unit, overseeing a nationwide organization serving millions of members. Her leadership demonstrated that operational discipline, customer focus, and people-centered management could drive exceptional business performance while fostering a culture of accountability and innovation.
Her reputation for transformational leadership led Starbucks to appoint her as Chief Operating Officer and Group President, where she became the first Black woman to hold one of the company’s highest executive positions. During a period of rapid global expansion and heightened public expectations, Brewer helped strengthen operational consistency while championing meaningful conversations around leadership, culture, and organizational responsibility.
In 2021, Brewer became Chief Executive Officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance, once again making history as one of the very few Black women to lead a Fortune 500 company. Guiding one of the world’s largest healthcare and pharmacy organizations required decisive leadership, resilience, and the ability to navigate an increasingly complex business landscape. Throughout her tenure, she remained focused on long-term value creation, operational improvement, and serving communities through accessible healthcare.
What distinguishes Roz Brewer is not simply the number of barriers she has broken, but the example she has set through every stage of her career. She has consistently demonstrated that leadership is measured not by titles, but by the ability to elevate organizations, inspire people, and make difficult decisions with integrity. Her willingness to advocate for inclusion while demanding excellence has reshaped expectations of modern executive leadership.
Beyond her executive responsibilities, Brewer has served on the boards of several of the world’s most influential companies, contributing her expertise across industries while mentoring future generations of leaders. Her influence extends well beyond the boardroom, inspiring countless women to pursue leadership with confidence, authenticity, and purpose.
Rosalind “Roz” Brewer’s legacy is one of resilience, strategic leadership, and courageous progress. She has shown that barriers are not removed by rhetoric alone, but through sustained excellence, exceptional execution, and the determination to create opportunities for those who follow.
